John McNab Deputy Chief Constable Grampian Police

Having graduated a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Town and Country Planning from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, John McNab, worked briefly as a company manager before joining Fife Constabulary in 1986.

Born in Kirkcaldy, he began his policing career in the nearby Levenmouth and Glenrothes areas of Central Fife in uniform and CID duties before being promoted to temporary sergeant on the Accelerated Promotion Course in 1992. He served in various posts: Traffic; CID; Uniform Beat Patrol; and other specialist roles, while rising through the ranks, before being promoted to Superintendent at Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary, leading on Force primary inspections and concluding a thematic report on the progress of Best Value within the Police service in Scotland.

In September 2002, Mr McNab returned to Fife Constabulary to head a rapid implementation project to provide an interim centralised call handling solution for the Force prior to the opening of a new build Force Contact Centre. On successful completion of the project in January 2003, he took territorial command of the Central Division of Fife Constabulary before progressing to participation on the 2004 Strategic Command Course at Bramshill.

On his return to Force, Mr McNab was temporarily promoted to Assistant Chief Constable, (Operations) which concluded in March 2005 at which point he took up the position of Head of Operational Support.

In April 2005, he was successful in his application for the post of Assistant Chief Constable within Grampian Police and took up this position in July of that year, with responsibility for Community Partnerships; Operational Policing; Crime Management; and Operational Planning and Support.

On 14 May 2007, following the promotion of the then Deputy Chief Constable Patrick Shearer, to Chief Constable of Dumfries & Galloway Constabulary, Mr McNab temporarily assumed the role of Deputy Chief Constable.
