Ian Latimer QPM Chief Constable Northern Constabulary

Ian Latimer Joined Merseyside Police in 1981, having spent several years in the banking and finance industry. He worked mainly within inner city areas of Liverpool gaining experience in uniform and CID operations.

In 1993 he was promoted to Chief Inspector with responsibility for all aspects of firearms response in Merseyside. In 1995 was promoted to Superintendent and became the Police Commander for the South Sefton-Bootle area of Liverpool.

In 1996 and 1997 he was Operational Commander at Aintree Grand National and in April 1997 had responsibility for the response to the PIRA bomb threats.

Promoted to Chief Superintendent as Head of Operations in Merseyside in May 1997 he attended the Strategic Command Course in 1998.

Appointed Assistant Chief Constable with the Devon & Cornwall Constabulary on February 1, 1999 initially he had responsibility for Human Resources, training and complaint investigation but in 2000, he assumed responsibility for Crime and Operations. Within that role he provided the Force response on a wide range of issues, including the fuel crisis and the foot and mouth outbreak.

On September 24, 2001 he was appointed Chief Constable of Northern Constabulary his contract will cease in September 2011.

In addition to his responsibilities within the Highlands and Islands, has taken the lead nationally on crime issues and a continuing role in the development of the strategic response on diversity issues.

He was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in Her Majesty’s 80th Birthday Honours in June 2006 and assumed the role of President of the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland on the 1st July 2006 which lasted for a year.
