Mike Tonge Chief Constable Gwent Police

Mr Tonge was Deputy Chief Constable with Merseyside Police before joining Gwent Police on 1st April 2004. He started his career at the age of 21 when he joined Lancashire Constabulary as a police constable and carried out a number of duties ranging from uniform and CID, Custody Sergeant and traffic patrol Sergeant until he was appointed as Inspector in 1987.
Mr Tonge remained with Lancashire Constabulary for another 11 years and rose through the ranks in CID and uniform, before being appointed as their Acting Assistant Chief Constable in 1998. In the December of the following year he moved to Merseyside Police as Assistant Chief Constable of Operations Support and in July of 2001 was responsible for Area Operations. Four months later he was promoted to Deputy Chief Constable of Merseyside Police.
From December 2001 until April 2003, Mr Tonge was appointed by the Policing Board of Northern Ireland to oversee the police service of Northern Ireland enquiry into the Omagh bomb. This resulted into the enquiry progressing and offenders being charged for the worst atrocity in Northern Ireland history.
He has also had responsibility for personnel and development with direct control of all personnel and training issues for the 6,000 staff within Merseyside Police and fulfilled the role of Finance Director for 6 months.
He is married with two daughters.
