Craig Mackey Chief Constable Cumbria Constabulary
Craig Mackey joined the Police Service in 1984 having previously been in the Merchant Navy where he worked for BP Shipping and trained as a deck officer. His initial police service was spent in Wiltshire where he held a variety of operational roles and commands. In 1991 he was selected for the Accelerated Promotion Course at Bramshill.

In 1999 he was selected as a specialist staff officer for her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary based at the Home Office. In this role he completed specialist inspections and thematic inspections, including the thematic ‘policing disorder’. He was also involved with a small team redesigning inspection protocols for forces.

He attended the Strategic Command Course at Bramshills in 2001. Whilst on the course he spent some time working with the Chicago Police looking at their approach to the review of murder enquiries. In November 2001, he joined Gloucestershire Constabulary as Assistant Chief Constable, as ACC he led on the outsourcing of custody guards and the introduction of PCSOs to the Force. In an operational capacity, he was the Gold Commander for the terrorism operation in Gloucester that resulted in the arrest of the second shoe bomber, and led the policing of the Gold Cup and the Royal International Air Tattoo at Fairford.  In 2005 he was appointed as Deputy Chief Constable, and amongst other achievements led the project to relocate to a new PFI Headquarters.

For the Association of Police Officers (ACPO) he sits on the Race & Diversity Business Area and leads for the service on Stop & Search and the monitoring of police powers. He is currently chair of the North West Regional ACPO.

He is married with one child and enjoys mountain biking, reading and is a keen rugby fan.
