Phil Gormley began his policing in Thames Valley Police in 1985, working in both uniform and detective roles in all ranks up to superintendent, where he was in charge of policing South Oxfordshire.

He joined the Metropolitan Police in January 2003 as a commander. While at the Met he was the strategic lead for firearms as well as aviation security; during this time he ensured the Met became compliant with the Firearms Code of Practice and implemented the National Aviation Marshall scheme.

In 2004 he was invited to take up the position of Secretary of the Association of Chief Police Officers standing committee on Terrorism and Allied Matters (ACPO TAM). In this role he helped to shape the future of counter terrorism policing nationally.

From 2005 Phil Gormley led on the modernisation of Specialist Operations and took command of the Met's Special Branch, which included leading on the development and engagement with the Muslim Community Safety Forum. He was also responsible for driving forward the merger of Special Branch and the Anti Terrorist Branch to form the new Counter Terrorism Unit for the Metropolitan Police.

He was appointed deputy chief constable of the West Midlands in December 2006.

Phil Gormley, aged 43, is married to an officer serving in Thames Valley Police and has a 12 year old daughter.
