Arthur Wright, born in 1876, a miner was initially appointed to the Derbyshire Constabulary as Pc 102 on 10th April 1901 but was medically retired in 1906 as a result of being assaulted whilst on duty. He was unable to return to full Police duties until July 1907 when he was re-appointed as Pc 299 serving at Starkholmes, Matlock. On the 27th March 1911 he drown in the River Derwent at Matlock whilst trying to rescue a female who had jumped into the river to avoid arrest. A monument now stands at this point.
